Protected Main Rights

The first part of the Charter (Articles 1 to 18) lists the rights acknowledged to every individual “without distinction of any kind such as race, ethnic group, colour, sex, language, religion, political or any other opinion, national and social origin, fortune, birth or any status” (Article 2).

The following Articles (19 to 24) define the rights of peoples that are considered equal: the right to existence, the free disposition of their wealth and natural resources, their economic, social and cultural development, the right to national and international peace and security and to a general satisfactory environment favourable to their development. The Charter condemns colonialism and economic domination.

The Articles 27 to 29 list the duties every individual has “towards his family and society, the State and other legally recognised communities and the international community” (Article 27).
