BINUB – UN Integrated Office in Burundi

BINUB is a political mission administered by the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). It was established by the UN Security Council Resolution 1719 of 25 October 2006, to assist Burundian Government efforts towards peace and stability, through coherent and coordinated response of the UN system in Burundi under the chairmanship of the Executive Representative of the UN Secretary-General.

In the implementation of its mandate, BINUB’s activities also include the “promotion and protection of human rights and taking measures to end impunity”.

The work of BINUB in regard to human rights includes building national institutional capacity in that area, particularly with regard to the rights of women, children and other vulnerable groups, by assisting with the design and implementation of a national human rights action plan including the establishment of an independent national human rights commission and support for efforts to combat impunity, particularly through the establishment of transitional justice mechanisms, including a truth and reconciliation commission and a special tribunal.
