Main rights protected by the CCPR

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights protects numerous fundamental rights, among them:

  • Right to life (Article 6);
  • Ban of torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment (Article 7);
  • Ban of slavery, slave-trade and forced labour (Article 8);
  • Right to liberty and security of person, ban of arbitrary arrest or detention (Article 9);
  • Equality before the courts and tribunals (Article 14);
  • Right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion (Article 18);
  • Right to peaceful assembly (Article 21);
  • Cultural rights of ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities (Article 27).
