The Guidelines offer a broad range of actions that allow the EU to support and protect the Human Rights Defenders.
The Human Rights Defenders, who are victims of a violation of their acknowledged rights in the UN Declaration of the Defenders of Human Rights, can report their situation or the facts they know to the Missions of the European Union and their Member States (Embassies of the EU Member States and Delegations of the European Commission) situated in their country.
Accordingly, these Missions act in a coordinated way, exchanging information, keeping contact with them, demanding for explications of their governments, visiting them if they are arrested, procuring an attorney and, if it takes place, attending the trial.
