UNAMID – AU/UN Hybrid operation in Darfur

A joint African Union / United Nations operation in Darfur was authorized by the UN Security Council resolution 1769 of 31 July 2007. The Council authorized UNAMID to take necessary action to support the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement, as well as to protect its personnel and civilians.

One of its goals is “to ensure an adequate human rights and gender presence capacity, and expertise in Darfur in order to contribute to efforts to protect and promote human rights in Darfur, with particular attention to vulnerable groups”.

Therefore was set up a Human Rights section. It is mandated to contribute to efforts to protect and promote human rights in Darfur, with particular attention to vulnerable groups and the protection of civilians and to assist in the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) and any other subsequent agreements.

The section is carrying out Human rights monitoring, investigation, reporting, advocacy and protection, capacity and institution-building activities. In addition, the Human Rights Section is required to engage the parties to the DPA with a view to identifying options for appropriate actions to prevent and remedy further violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The UNAMID Human Rights Section engages regularly in dialogue with the Government Advisory Council on Human Rights (HRS) regarding the general human rights situation and specifically on the implementation of the recommendations made by the Group of Experts on Darfur (GED) of the UN Human Rights Council.

In addition to the UNAMID Headquarters, the Human Rights Section has presence in capitals of the three States of Darfur, namely, El Fasher (North Darfur), Nyala (South Darfur), El Geneina (West Darfur) and in Zalingei (East-West) and 11 military out posts.
